In 1997, rather than building a new arena, a decision was made to proceed with a $121 million renovation to bring the facility up to par with other arenas in the league. The seating capacity increased from just over 15,000 to 19,596 for basketball. In fact, the only remaining original sections of the facility that exist are the external walls, roof and foundation.
