Golden State Warriors fans are used to coaches' preseason proclamations that this year's team will place an increased emphasis on defense. They are even more used to finding out that, emphasis or no, this year's team stinks on D — just three Warriors teams in the past 30 years have finished in the top half of the league in points allowed per 100 possessions. Before last season, new coach Mark Jackson promised a playoff run keyed by hard-nosed defense, then watched his Warriors finish 13th in the West after giving up an average of 106 points per 100 possessions, tied for the NBA's fourth-worst mark, according to NBA.com's stat tool.
