Steph Curry has perfect excuse for a day of golf with latest charity venture

STANFORD, Calif. – Steph Curry’s phone was blowing up. Texts kept coming through, people giving their reactions and getting his. It’s not like this had to do with the Warriors. His employers still hadn’t made a move this NBA offseason at the time, and still at this publishing, with training camp weeks away. The texts weren’t about Jonathan Kuminga’s contract situation or any of the other free agents linked to the Warriors. Everybody could get behind this story. Curry is as much a fan of golf as he is a player. He’s a diehard. It doesn’t take that level of love for the game to get behind Tommy Fleetwood winning the Tour Championship as his first PGA Tour win after so many close calls ending in heartbreak. “I’m not just saying this now because he won – our group text, the golf group text, we are huge Tommy fans,” Curry told NBC Sports Bay Area last Wednesday at the Stanford Golf Course during his Workday Charity Classic. “Have always been. Loved seeing him get over the hump. “It’s kind of a good warmup for the Ryder Cup coming up at the end of September. I’m excited to watch. Obviously, I’m Team USA on that front. Golf is great when some of your household names and guys that represent the tour so well like Tommy Fleetwood has get it done, get in the winner’s circle, you love to see him get rewarded.” The group text was enough. Curry didn’t express his excitement for Fleetwood’s win on social media, but newest golf aficionado LeBron James did. James posted five times on his X account during the final day of the Tour Championship, congratulating Fleetwood on his victory. Like Curry long ago, he appears to be hooked. His venture is new, but it certainly feels like basketball players are finding more and more of a love for golf. The intersection of Curry’s two favorite worlds is what he has always hoped for. The more, the merrier. There’s no gatekeeping here from someone who always wants more people to see and feel the joy golf can bring. “It’s what I love to see,” Curry said. “And I think it’s what we’ve been waiting patiently for. Just the fact that it’s more in the daily conversation now of people. Whether you’re starting from scratch, or whether you’ve played growing up or coming back to the game, or it’s something that you’re as passionate about as I am – whatever stage, there’s something for you out on the course. I love to see newcomers come out here and understand the joy that comes with it. “It’s just about being around good people and the challenge of getting a little better each and every day.” Fans, teammates and opponents all have seen when Steph gets in the zone. The Splash Zone of the hardwood is a special sight, depending on which side of it you’re on. Curry chases that same feeling with a golf club in his hands, and he wants everybody to know the sensation.“When you hit that one good shot, there’s no better feeling than that,” he says. “Doesn’t matter if it’s one out of 100, you’re still just looking for that one.” Going into his 17th season in the NBA, Curry has played with a number of Warriors teammates who can let it spin with a stick. Picking between two who won all four championships with him was bound to hurt some feelings. Curry didn’t cop-out, though. “Ohh, either Andre [Iguodala] or Klay [Thompson] are going to be mad at which one I choose,” Curry contemplated. “I played with Andre recently, I saw his game. I’d have to go with Andre. He’s probably the best that I’ve played with. Pat Spencer might be No. 2.”Now imagine Curry’s longest-tenured teammate taking his turn at golf. Some frustrations just might come out. Draymond Green undoubtedly is the one Warrior that Curry wants to see on the course a whole lot more, poking fun at him in the process. “He gets out here a good amount. He’s on vacation and he sent me a picture of him playing,” Curry said. “And I use playing (does air quotes) generously. But he’s out here. He gets it. He understands it. He’s just staying patient on the actual getting better at it.”Curry’s two sides of sports and philanthropy came together three days after Fleetwood’s win at the sixth annual Workday Charity Classic golf tournament. All the money from the event benefits Curry’s Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, with an emphasis on providing essential literacy support for thousands of Oakland elementary students who are severely behind in reading. It is the foundation’s marquee fundraising event, getting the year started with school now in session. Foundation (&commat;eatlearnplay) August 29, 2025 Already having written two children’s books, Curry is about to become a three-time author with the release of ‘Shot Ready’ on Sept. 9, a blueprint of his success through words and pictures. As Curry stands in front of the Eat. Learn. Play. bus that is decorated with drawings of he and Ayesha, a basketball hoop and books galore, the goal is broken down in the simplest of terms. “We want to decrease the stigma around it and make reading fun,” Curry said. “Make it a part of your daily routine, just knowing how much that unlocks your ability to climb the ladder and achieve your full potential.” Joaquin Miller Elementary recently became Eat. Learn. Play’s 20th refurbished unique play space in Oakland, with a goal of 25 by the end of 2026. The Foundation’s CEO Chris Helfrich in September also announced a new movement to raise and invest &dollar;50 million in additional support and resources for Oakland students through the 2025-2026 academic year. “Our core belief is that Oakland students deserve more, that they deserve the best,” Helfrich says. “Those resources, that commitment that we made means that kids are having access to the nutritious food they need. We’re providing 1-on-1, high dosage tutoring for thousands of students so they can become great readers. We’ve helped re-energize school sports. “School sports participation in Oakland middle schools since we’ve got involved with this has risen 300 percent. Next week, we’re remodeling our 21st schoolyard in the flatlands of Oakland, making sure kids have dream places to play and learn and grow. That’s part of that &dollar;50 million pledge that we made. We’re just trying to do everything we can to transform the school experience for a generation of kids.” This year’s Workday Charity Classic raised just under &dollar;2 million, an increase from last year. From the sports world, along with Curry, the day included football legends Steve Young, Peyton Manning and Larry Fitzgerald, USA women’s soccer great Brandi Chastain, golfers Matt Kuchar, Davis Love III and Michelle Wie-West, as well as Warriors owner Joe Lacob, assistant coach Bruce Fraser and Iguodala. Curry is a huge supporter and funder of the Howard men’s and women’s golf teams. Howard alumna Kendall Jackson, who was a four-time All-NEC golfer at the university and recently turned pro, also participated in this year’s tournament.The eighth hole is where the party was at. The smell of a taco truck was met by beats playing and Kelly James on the mic, serving as part roaster and part freestyle rapper all in one when celebrities teed up. Young went from barely making contact to being inches from a hole in one. Both Lacob and Iguodala weren’t happy with their drives, while Curry’s drive hit the front of the green on the Par 3. His partner for the day had an even better drive after needing a breather from laughing in response to James’ personal lyrics. Workday co-founder Aneel Bhusri went pin-high left side, getting a round of applause from Curry. Bhusri has led the way in all six of these charity golf events, seeing them grow year by year, and recently joined the board of Eat. Learn. Play. “They’re very hands-on behind the scenes,” Bhusri said of working with Steph and Ayesha Curry. “That’s not typical for folks that are so busy. Steph and Ayesha are handing out gifts for Christmas. They’re actively involved with where we decide to invest in Oakland. I’ve seen Steph hand out food during COVID. They’re leading from the front, they’re hands-on involved. “And they have so much empathy. You can just see it in how they act. That’s probably something that people don’t know about. Just how much empathy they have for the community, and for everyone.” Basketball will be here in a blink. Curry’s long offseason finally is coming to an end. That will never halt his continued works through Eat. Learn. Play, or finding such an exemplary excuse for spending the day on a golf course.
