Draymond Green’s player option held the cards to what direction the Warriors could go this offseason. His decision just opened up a new world of possibilities and signals a shift in the Warriors’ plans. Green on Monday morning declined his $27.7 million player option, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported, citing sources. The four-time Warriors champion had until 2 p.m. PT on Monday to decide on his option. Opting out gives the Warriors much more financial flexibility this offseason, which brings us to our next bit of news. The precursor to Green’s decision came Sunday night when Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor reported, citing multiple league sources, the Warriors’ pursuit of an Anthony Davis trade to help lure LeBron James in free agency. Green declining his player option should allow the Warriors to have the $15.1 non-taxpayer mid-level exception at their disposal to offer James. Going after Davis, however, would almost assuredly mean saying goodbye to another Warriors star. Jimmy Butler, who is rehabbing a torn ACL, is on an expiring $56.8 million contract for next season.
